Bio
Courtney B. Cook, Ph.D., is a Professor, Producer (Impact/Story), writer, and researcher with over 15 years of experience using multimedia storytelling to support sociocultural change. She is Professor of Public History and Documentary Film at Texas State University and spent seven years at POV/American Documentary, where she developed national engagement strategies and produced impact, educational and facilitation resources for documentary features and shorts.
Courtney holds a Ph.D. in Cultural Studies in Education from the University of Texas at Austin and brings a historically grounded understanding of how power shapes institutions, communities, relationships, and everyday life. She supports filmmakers and creative teams with project development, narrative framing, historical and qualitative research, writing, ethics, nuanced impact strategies, and liberatory approaches to education and public engagement.
Currently, she is working to advise queer and Palestinian filmmakers, artists, and storytellers—and with projects that challenge conventional ways of seeing, making, and sharing stories. She is also open to collaborations across many categories and mediums so long as the work work aligns with her commitments to ethical storytelling, creative experimentation, collective accountability, complicating structures of power, and meaningful public life.
