Bio
Karoliina Gröndahl (1984) holds an MA in documentary film directing from the DocNomads Joint Masters program. Skilled in conveying emotions through the moving image, Karoliina shoots most of her films herself.
Karoliina’s documentary feature The Labour of Pain and Joy, part of Ice and Fire Docs workshop and DocPoint IMPACT training, premiered at the CPH:DOX – the Copenhagen International Documentary Film Festival 2024 in the NORDIC:DOX Competition. The Labour of Pain and Joy had a successful cinema release in Finland in August 2024. The film is currently part of the YLE Areena Documentary Festival.
Short documentary Every Tom, Dick and Urpo (orig. Ei nimi miestä pahenna) premiered in September 2023 at the Helsinki International Film Festival – Love & Anarchy where it received a New Wave award. It also received Jury's Honorable Mention at the Tampere Film Festival 2024.
Karoliina is one of the founding members of the Documentary Film Collective Antares. The collective held a seminar ‘Don't be alone - The possibilities of film collectives in supporting creators’ together with the Documentary Guild at the Tampere Film Festival 2025. Karoliina is also involved in developing the documentary industry in the Documentary Guild's work well-being and responsibility working groups. In November 2024, Karoliina participated in the IDFA festival with the Antares collective with a mobility grant from the Finnish Cultural Foundation. Participation in IDFA created an opportunity to develop our collective's activities and expand domestic and international networks.
Karoliina was a board member of the Finnish Documentary Guild 2020-2024 and an alumna of IDFAcademy 2022.
